Including as an abrasive, anti-caking agent, and as a filler in rubber and plastics. It is also used as a food additive, and in the manufacturing of toothpaste, paints, and adhesives. Precipitated silica is produced by the hydrolysis of a silicon compound, such as sodium silicate, in water.
This reaction produces a colloidal solution of silicon dioxide, which is then precipitated out of solution by the addition of a precipitating agent, such as calcium chloride. The resulting precipitate is then filtered and dried to produce the finished product.
